uAvionix tailBeacon FAQ
How does uAvionix tailBeacon work?
The uAvionix tailBeacon works by integrating a WAAS GPS and a 978 MHz UAT (Universal Access Transceiver) into an aircraft’s existing rear position light. It automatically transmits the aircraft’s location, altitude, and velocity to air traffic control and other aircraft equipped with ADS-B In. The tailBeacon is set up and configured using a smartphone app that communicates with the device via Bluetooth. Once configured, it operates autonomously.
What aircraft is uAvionix tailBeacon certified for?
The uAvionix tailBeacon is certified for installation on hundreds of different aircraft makes and models, as listed in the Approved Model List (AML) .
How long does it take to install uAvionix tailBeacon?
The installation time for the uAvionix tailBeacon can vary based on the specific aircraft and the individual’s experience with installations. However, it is designed for easy installation and generally can be completed in less than an hour. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and, if necessary, seek professional assistance to ensure a safe and correct installation.
What is the difference between tailBeacon and tailBeaconX?
The tailBeacon and tailBeaconX are both ADS-B systems by uAvionix, but they differ in their technology and frequency of operation. The original tailBeacon uses a 978-MHz universal access transceiver and is primarily used for ADS-B Out mandate compliance in the United States. On the other hand, tailBeaconX is a Mode S ADS-B transponder that broadcasts on 1090 MHz and leverages Aireon’s space-based satellite constellation for aircraft position data. While slightly more expensive than the original tailBeacon, tailBeaconX is less costly to install than a traditional diversity transponder and offers additional benefits of space-based ADS-B technology, especially in locations where ground-based services are insufficient.
